MORE APPEALS

HEARD BY MILITARY SERVICE BOARD. Tho Third Military Service Board sat yesterday for the hearing of appeals for exemption from military service. Mr W. H. S. Moorhouse presided, and with him were Messrs A. O. Considine and. M. J. Mack. Captain P. E. Baldwin appeared as military representative. Appeals were allowed in the cases of the following convicts, who are undergoing sentences of twelve months and over, and are consequently not reservists : —Thomas Brindle, labourer, Wellington; James Vincent, labourer, Wellington; Edward James Walsh, Waikeria prison; Charles Howard Taylor, labourer, Wellington; John James Ross, labourer, Waimarino; Harold Andrews, labourer, Waikeria prison, Kihikihi; Alexander Wright, Invercargill prison; Herbert Hodgson, painter, Waikeria prison, Te Awamutu. .SLAUGHTERMEN EXEMPTED. Mr M. J. Reardon, secretary of the Slaughtermen’s Federation, applied for exemption of the following slaughtermen: —Harry Cox, Farmers’ Freezing Company. Ltd., Feilding; George Duncan , Smart, College street, Oamaru; Thomas, Johnston, Turanganui Hotel, Gidborno. The board granted exemption for a period not fixed, provided appellants remain at their present occupation during the slaughtering season. Tho board stated that at the close of the season tho men should be prepared to engage in any other essential industry. NO RECOMMENDATION•

It was decided to recommend that the application of Private Thurston, of the 27H)h Reinforcements, for a week’s leave of absence, be granted. DECISION DEFERRED. John Wyllie Oandlish, third mate of the Ngahere, had his appeal adjourned for one month, to allow of inquiries being made as to. his physical fitness. EXEMPTION GRANTED. The. appeal 6t Stafford Meredith Brown, wireless operator of the s.s. Flora, which was - supported by bis employers, was adjourned without date. SHEARER EXEMPTED. Peter Neville, for whom Mr O.' Grayndler, secretary of the Shearers’ Union, appeared, forwarded a statement to the effect that he intended remaining at'the industry.. The board granted exemption, without fixing a date, on the usual conditions.' ' ' . ' BOOT EXPERTS. In the case of two -bootmakers, Henry William Price -and Thomas Ward, for whom exemption was claimed by their , employers, as well as themselves; on the ground that they were experts in handling boot. machines, the' hoard decided to inspect the machineiyOn resuming, the appeal of Price was adjourned for two months, exemption being granted-provided he remains at his present occupation. The appeal of Ward was dismissed.
