COUNCIL TAKES ACTION RESTBIOTIVE BY-LAW PASSED. Owing to the long-con tinned drought the City Council has felt it necessary to take steps to restrict the use of water as much as possible to strictly necessary purposesAt a special meeting of the council yesterday afternoon, therefore, a ihy-law was puisscd prohibiting the uso of water for the following pmposcs:—(l) Cleaning, windows and washing business promises and houses by means of a hose; (2) watering guidons by means of a hose or other removable pipe; (3) ; ornamental .. purposes such as fountains, pom.-s, etc. The regulation applies aho.to the public gardens and reserve*,. Luke) suggested further to a ‘‘Times" representative that citizens could do much more than merely carry , out these regulations. . Proprietors of hotels or other largo establishments could stop plunge baths, substituting showers, and the snmo should ho done in the public baths. Private householders, also, could economise in. very many ways. “The public,” said the Mayor, "are apparently not so impressed with tup need for economy, because! the pressure is everywhere..maintained. I his, however, only shows the; efficiency ot iho water-supply system, and does not mean that a shortage may not be experienced. The various storage roseivoira and the pumping which has been established for serving tiro higher levels have done tjicir work so •well that uo residents on the heights are suffering any more than those on lower levels.
