SWIMMING CARNIVAL AT EVANS BAY. A patriotic swimming carnival was held at Evans Bay on Saturday afternoon. A large crowd gathered on the beach to witness the proceedings. Collection boxes and stalls were much in evidence; and it is expected that the Soldiers’ Club will benefit to a large extent, the carnival being held for this purpose. The Tramways Military Band played selections during the afternoon. SWIMMING PICNIC AT DAY’S BAY. On Saturday afternoon the lady memfaers of the Royal Life-saving and Swimming Club, also the Island Bay, W’orser Bay and Hataitai Clubs held a combined picnic at Day’s Bay. The weather was all that could be desired, and a Very pleasant (afternoon was -spent. About 70 members and their friends journeyed to the bay. A display 111 the methods of life-saving was given by the members of the Ladies Royal Life-saving and Island Bay Life-saving and Swimming Clubs and was much appreciated by the many spectators. The following was the result of the races held during the afternoon:— 50 Yards Free Stylo Handicap.—Miss M Troup (Hataitai) 1. Miss D. Donnelly (L.R.L.S.). 2. 50 Yards Breast Stroke HandicapMiss K- Pownnll (Worser Bay) 1, Miss A. Walker (L.E.L.S.) 2. 50 Yards Married Ladies Handicap.— Mrs Jones (Island Bay) 1, Mrs Low (Island Bay) 2. 50 Yards Free Style, under 14.—Miss A Walker (L.E.L.S. and S.C.) 1, Miss F. Martin (L.R.L.S. and S.C.) 2. T°anis Race.—Worser Bay (Miss K. Pownall and Miss M. Manthell) 1, L.R.L.S. and S.C. (Misses D. Donnelly and N. Edmanson) 2. After the races all adjourned to the kiosk, where afternoon tea was partaken of, and the prizes were presented by Mr G. S. Hill, chairman of the Wellington Head Centre, Royal Life-saving Societv. Brief speeches were given by Mr Hill. Mr Coy (president of the Island Bay Life-saving and Swimming Club), and Mr T. At the swimming sports in the Tepid Baths vesterday, E. G. L. Paterson, aged about 18, won the 100 yards provincial championship, equalling Malcolm’s champion Dominion record of 6U seconds.
