SITTING ON SATURDAY STRICTER FILM CENSORSHIP DESIRED. The Methodist Conference continued its sittings on Saturday. The resolution with regard to film censorship was finally carried in the following form : —“That this Conference regards with satisfaction the appointment of a Government censor of picture films, but regrets that photo-plays containing suggestive and vulgar iscenes continue to be screened at many of our picture theatres, to the moral detriment of the community, the evil being intensified in many instances by the screened announcements preceding the various parts of the film; and this Conference urges not only a stricter censorship in these respects, hut also respectfully brings under the notice of the Government the necessity for extending the powers of the censorship, that all newspaper and poster advertisements ol pictures and other plays will come uituiii its scope.’’ SOCIAL PURITY. It was also unanimously resolved “That this Conference expresses its appreciation of the earnest efforts of the lion. G. W. Russell to deal with the dangers of venereal disease, and commends the booklet issued by the Defence Department and the instruction given tp our young men in the military training camps. Conference urges our ministers to acquaint themselves w l lh the facts so that they may speak with authority in warning young men against the dangers and consequences or the sins of immorality.” CHURCH UNION. On the subject of Church union, the following resolution was passed without dissent'.-“That this Synod, recognising that the war has revealed or created great problems that are full of challenge to the Christian Church—problems that will need tor their solution all the strength that comes from unity of purpose and counsel and action aipongst the various religious demomuationa, and recognising further tie practical difficulty of securing at present any organic union of the Churches, strongly recommends the Conference to taliß into its consideration the question of encouraging such a federation as would, whilst safeguarding the autonomy of the individual Churches, provide, for mutual co-operation in Christian service, and thus prepare the way for a yet fuller measure of union and concord.”

POSITION OB' LOCAL BRANCHES. The undermentioned questions with regard to local preachers were referred to committee: —(1) The best method of securing capable man to take up the work of local preaching : (2) making provision under the direction of Conference for the study of suitable subjects, with a view to securing greater efficiency in the work: (3) making provision for the payment of out of pocket expenses incurred in travelling to and from appointments, to- all local preachers; (4) making legal and encouraging. united preachers' meetings, such meetings to be empowered to refer matters of discipline to the quarterly meetings concerned; (5) the feasibility of granting direct representation to local preachers at Synod and Conference; (6) the possibility of establishing a fund to assist local preachers in old age and infirmity; (7) to report on any matter that in the committee’s judgment would assist the local preachers in their work.
