CHARGES OF BETTING
MAN SENT TO GAOL. Press Association. , AUCKLAND, January 25. At the Magistrate’s Court, Walter Preston was charged that, being a bookmaker, he made a bet at the Ellerslie racecourse on January 2nd. lie pleaded gu'.lty. The Chief Detective stated that defendant had a long list of gaming convictions, and mentioned that a fine of £75 imposed a few months ago was still unpaid. The magistrate imposed'' a fine of £IOO. in default three months. As defendant had no property upon which to distrain, an order was made for his immediate committal ;n respect to both charges, the warrants to run concurrently. William McLeod was fined £2o tor betting in Queen street.
