MAGISTRATE’S COURT

PETONE CASES. Tho monthly sitting of the Petone Magistrate's Court was presided over yesterday by Mr-L. G. Reid, S.M. For cycling at night without lights, Mary Gordon, who explained that she was going for medicine for her father, was ordered to pay 7s costs; John Clark and Leonard Young were each fined ss, with costa 7s. Edward Lintem, for driving a vehicle without a light after sunset, was. fined ss, cost® 7s. W. E. Miles, for a breach of his prohibition order, was fined 5s costs 7s.

C. T. Bargh (manager of tho Petone railway workshops) proceeded against Richard John Martin, seventeen years of age. for a breach of the Master and Apprentices Act. The evidence showed that the defendant was apprenticed on September 29th, 1914, to learn the trade of a boilermaker. In October of the present year he refused, to work, and became insulting, with the object of getting his indentures cancelled. He was asked to explain his conduct, and refused to do so. His Worship, after reading out the provisions of the Act, told defendant that h© was liable to imprisonment for refusing to obey orders, and strongly advised him to go hack to his work, and obey instructions. If ho did not like that particular class of work, his only remedy was to apply to have his indentures cancelled. Defendant was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. For storing kerosene without a license. Charles Yuen, a Chinese, was fined. 10s, costs 7s. For by means of a garden hose, Thomas Williams, R. Parker, and C. F. Couchman were each ordered to pay 7s, costs. Judgment was given for defendant, by default, in the following undefended civil cases:—Sibun Ltd., v. Robert Froggart, £1 3s 9d, costs 7s; Mrs F. Baker- r. H. Parker, £1 15s, costs Ps;. Petone Borough Council v. George Moody, £1 8s 4d. costs ss.
