GEOLOGICAL SECTION ANNUAL MEETING.

Tlie annual meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society, Geological Section, was held last evening at the Dominion Museum. Mr G. Hogben, C.M-G., F.G.S., presided. The annual report stated that during the year seven meetings had been held, with an average attendance of fourteen. The papers read dealt with widely different .i&pects of geology, and, together with the numerous exhibits, have combined to maintain interest in the meetings, and to mark the year as one of steady progress. The following papers have been read;—“A Phase of Shore-line Erosion,” by Mr J. A. Bartrum; “Terminology for Foraminal Development m Terebratuloids,” by Mr S. S. Buckman; “Tlie Continental Shelf” and “The Motion of Water in Waves,” by Dr C. A. Cotton; “The Geological Occurrence and Origin of Petroleum,” by Messrs W. Gibson and M. Ongley; '‘The Structure of the Paparoa Range,” by Dr J. Henderson; “An Artesian Trial Bore at the Westshore, Napier,” by Mr R. W. Holmes; “Notes of a Vijit to Marlborough and North Canterbury,” by Mr P. G. Morgan; “Stage Names Applicable to the Divisions of the Tertiary in New Zealand,” by Mr J. A. Thomson; “The Volcanic Rocks of Oamaru,” by Mr G. Uttley. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Chairman, Dr C. A. Cotton; vice-chair-man, Dr J. Henderson; hon. secretary, Mr E. K. Lomas; committee, Messrs Morgan, Ongley, Uttley, Holmes, and Dr Thomson. During the evening Dr J- Allan Thomson read papers as follow; —(1) “On the so-called ‘Drift Formation’ of Hawera”; (2) '‘The Geology of the Middle Clarence Valley, between the Bluff and Herring River.”
