The finding of the Court of Inquiry into the stranding of the Rangatira, which went ashore in a fog on Bobbe Island, near Capetown, on Mas-ch 31st last, was as follows: —"We consider that the master showed negligence in the navigation of the vessel, and we recommend that his certificate bo suspended for a period of six months. We are of opinion that in view of the state of the weather, and the uncertainty of Dijis position, the master should have reduced the speed of the vessel earlier .or stopped her to enable him either to pick up the sound of the fog signal or to obtain a more frequent series of soundings with the Sir William Thompson sounding machine, or with the hand lead, which was not used at all, and to these omissions we must attribute the casualty."
