A MOTOR KITCHEN

THE MAYOR’S NATIONAL APPEAL.

The Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) is making an ■ appeal to the people of New Zealand to subscribe the sum of £6OO, the estimated cost of a motor kitchen for the front. Eighteen, months of warfare has demonstrated that motor kitchens can render very considerable service in, the case of the wounded men near the firing line, and that fact, the Mayor is confident, is quit© sufficient to ensure a ready and liberal response to his call. The British Red Cross Society declares that motor kitchens cannot be too highly commended; and, in answer to inquiries made by Mrs WH. Sefton Moorhouse, Surgeon-Gene-ral Henderson says:—“The authorities have permitted such buffets to be used in the field, several have been issued by the Red Cross. Whether these buffets are permitted to get up as far as the advance dressing station depends on the local general, but I know in some instances they have been allowed to do so, and they have been tremendously appreciated by the soldiers. I think, however, that they can be safely be subscribed for.” Captain Atkinson, .of the King’s Royal Rifles, wrote recently: “ Two months ago, when 1 returned from the front it was impossible for men returning from the firing line to obtain any extra comforts other than those that could be arranged regimentally. If hot drinks could be provided at or near dressing stations, they would mean everything to the wounded men.” Captain Atkinson’s statement shows how invaluable are the services that can be rendered by a motor kitchen at the front. It is unfortunate, but at times unavoidable, that the wounded have sometimes to be left for days before being taken to the dressing stations, and the hot, nourishing drinks given in time mean many lives saved-
