THE "GASSED" GOAT
AN EXPERIMENT THAT ENDEb HAPPILY. NORTHERN FRANCE/Nov. 23. The following true story ended so happily for the goat that perhaps even pronounced humanitarians will forgive the experiment. One of an eager band of experimental scientists in France desired to test the qualities of a new gas. The bomb was exploded in a trench, and for want of other animals a goat, borrowed from a neighbouring farm, was. let down into the gaseous area. The rescue was effected a fewi minutes later, when the goat was found to bo •weeping copiously and suffering great inward discomfort. A first-class veterinary surgeon was at once sent for, but when he saw his patient was with difficulty persuaded that the demand on his services was serious. Happily he was able to combine the exercise of his professional duties with dofence against possible humorists. His "prescription was that the goat should be first givun. an alkaline ball, and then •fed with a spoon at short intervals through the night with various delectable mashes. The treatment was entirely successful. A good many experiments with different sorts of gas holmcts have been made also upon men.
