MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. " Tho monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was hold yesterday. There were prosent: Mr M. W. Welch (chairman), Councillors W. Galloway, T. Bdwardß, 3. WTiitoman and W. J. Howell. On the motion of Councillor Howell, it was agreed that the clerk's salary be increased by £l2 per annum. The overdraft at the bank was reported to be £7448. Accounts amounting to £ll6l 0s 2d were passed for payment. A letter from the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board reported three cases of scarlet fever at a residence in Park avenue. Mr ii, H. Savage asked the council to lease part of county road reserve at Lowry Bay.—lt was decided that the matter be held over until a lator meeting of the council to enable the member for the district to be present and report. A letter was read from Mr Q. J 3. Tolhurst concerning road maintenance between Wellington and Upper Hutt. —lt was decided that a letter he sent to Mr Tolhurst thanking him for any information which he was prepared to give tho council in the matter. In connection with the issue of camping permits on the roods in the Lowry Bay and Day's Bay districts, the Wellington City Council wrote stating that its employees had been instructed to work in conjunction with the County Council's tanger in taking every precaution to prevent the spread of any fires which may arise from such camps. The council decided that the penalty of 10 per cent .additional on rates for the year 1915-16 come into force on February 14th. It was decided that Wednesday be the statutory half-holiday in the week for 1916, pursuant to the provisions of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908. A letter was received from tho Railway Department complaining that the view of the railway level crossing at Paraparaumu was blocked by trees overhanging tho footpaths.—The council dpcided to refer the letter hack to the department to deal with the mattor, as in consequence of the trees being on private property, the council was unable to take any action. The department also wrote complaining that stones' continued to roll on to the railway lines near Paekakariki from th 0 road which is being widened there. The_piles hud been driven for the four wings at Silverstream bridge. The fillinfi-in of the two spans and removal of timbers would he gone on with as soon as posr sible. The maintenance of all roads throughout the county had been attended to, and they -were at present in verv fair order. The ferro-concrete bridge in Wainwi-o-mata- was near completi&n, and- the approaches were being filled in.
