The deceased gentleman first set foot on New Zealand shores in 1851. when he arrived in Auckland, at the age of sixteen years, with hig parents. In ISO? he entered the Native Department, and when the seat of Government was changed to Wellington he was transferred with it. After nine years he was returned to Auckland, and became chief clerk of the Civil Commissioner's Office. In 1882 he was again removed to the Native - Office in Wellington, and four years later was retrenched from th», Civil Service, becoming town clerk to the Onslow Borough in the year 1894. •He held this position until three years ago, when, at the age of 77, he retired. Mr Vickers took a keen interest in the social life of the community. He interested himself also in religions matters, and had a great deal to do with the erect : on of the Khandallab Anglican Church. He was instrumental in the erection of the first public school in the Onslow district, and played a leading part in the transaction whereby the Onslow Council became possessed of the Kbandnllah Domain. Mr Vickers left a widow, three sons and two daughters, Messrs H. G. and W. G. Vickers (Wellington), Mr H. Vickers (Auckland), Mrs C. T. H. Brown (Wellington), and Miss Vickers (Khandallab).
