The - Mastorton spring meeting lakes place to-day, when it is expected that there will be a large attendance. The first event on the programme is the Trial Stakes, for which twenty horses have accepted, compared with fourteen starters last season, when the race was won by the Treutham-trained Miraculous. On account of the barrier at the Dunedin meeting not acting when the field for the' Eanfurly Handicap was being neat - away, it -was discarded, and the fields in the ffest of the events were dispatched with a flag, i The City Handicap, ah the Auckland spring meeting, which carries with it a stake of 10CO sovs. has attracted thirtytwo horses, including last season’s winner, Eoyal Irish. There were eleven starters for the event last year, and there is every probability of the number being increased this.■'■'Eoyal Irish has only advanced 41b, but the class of horses that have been, nominated for the race which is to be decided next mouth are such that the interest that will bo created in the ultimate result will be considerable-. The speedy Chortle heads the list of handicaps with 9.11, and the success of the Multifid gelding in' the Hawke’s Bay district recently must bring him a large amount, of support if, he is a starter. In all probability Balboa, will, go to the barrier favourite, but there are so many good horses handicapped for the event that the race is a very open, one, and to sort out the winner is no light task. The nominations for the C.J.C. meeting (general entries) are due on October 22nd. tho weights for the Stewards’ Handicap on October 15th, and the acceptances on the 22nd; W. H. Thomson has in hand a six-year-old mare by Coniform—Jewel, the property of Mr VV. A. Nicolls. K. 'J.
