MAGISTRATE’S COURT
.POLICE AND; CIVIL CASES.. ' ' The criminal portion of the sitting of the -Magistrate’s Court yesterday was over by Mr D. ■<*. Ai Cooper, S.M., and Mr. W.' G. Eiddell, S':M., adindicated in the civil cases. , Lilian Jukes, charged with being drunk and with wi'ifu iy damaging the lining of a padded cell, was remanded, on the application, of the police, in order that she may bo medically examined. Elizabeth Musgrave; who was stated to have escaped from the Salvation Army Home; where she was committed for reformatory • treatment, on two previous occasions; was again before the court for a similar offence. • She pleaded guilty to the charge and expressed her unwillingness to be sent back to the home- Accused was convicted and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. • Oh charges of insobriety, Wi I ,jam Bice' was fined JS2, in default seven days’ imprisonment; Joseph Murphy 20s, in default ‘three days; and John Joseph Diguan 20s, in default forty-eight hours. Charles Branch,, described as a former. member of the crew of the steamer Dorset, admitted. assaulting John MeDeed,/the chief engineer of the vessel. Mr A. W. Blair, who appeared on behalf .of the shipping '.company, stated that accused approached the engineer on ihe. wharf and ■ asked to be paid off. rhd request being refused, he struck the officer, and was stopped by the captain of the vessel from continuing the assault. Defendant had since been paid off, as the authorities bad no use for him. Counsel asked for a substantial penalty. Sis Worship said that be looked upon assaults by ‘men on their officers as more serious than when committed under ordinary circumstances. Accused was fined £2, with the alternative of seven days’ imprisonment. CIVIL CASES. - Judgment was given for plaintiff in the following undefended civil cases by default:—G. H. Thornton v. Harry Martin, i£ 13 17s 4d, costs ‘£l 10s £d; Bobt. Jas. Murphy v. Wm. Henry M. Stevens, £IOO, costs JS3; E. B. Seccombe v. Wallace Simmonds, £1 11s, costs 7s; May Hutton, trading, ns Staveley’s Labour Agency, v. H. Houldsworth, £2 15s, costs ss; W. Wylie v. D. M. Murray, £1 16s Id, costs ,stf; E. Young v. W. L. Cole, £1 10s 6d, costs ss; Excelsior , Supply Co., Ltd:, v. O. Yeadou, £1 2s 2d costs js; Thomas O’Brien v. Watty Martin, Jl3 ss, costs 10s; Oscar ’Hewett and Co. v. Wm. Eyles, £7s. Costs .£1 3s 6d.
