Bv the will of the lute Thomas Cawthron the bulk of his estate is, devised fcr the prosecution of a great project which the testator had evidently had in view for many years. After making provision for a number of annuities and legacies to relatives all the. other real and personal property is bequeathed to the Bishop of Nelson, the Mayor of Nelson, the chairman of”tho Waimca County Council, the members of the House of Representatives and the Legislative Council for the city of Nelson and Waimea electorate, . the chairman of l the Nelson Harbour Board and William Rout the younger, of Nelson, all in trust and who are all also to he executors of the will, for the purchase of land and erection and maintenance of an industrial ajid technical school, institute, and museum, to be called the Cawthron Institute. It is understood that the testator contemplated an institution on somewhat similar lines to scientific and research institutes in Europe, and covering a wide range of activity bearing 'upon industry and commerce. The value of the estate is not yet accurately known, hut it is believed to be in the neighbourhood of a quarter of a million. The will was executed in London in 1902.
