HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Harowhenua County Council was held at Levin on Saturday. Present—Councillors G. Watson (Chairman), G. A. Monk, . Geo: Catley, G. N. Stephenson, P. Rotter, J. Kebbell, J. Broadbelt and H. Freeman. ■ Leave of absence was granted Council, lor Vend. • , The Commissioner of Crown Lands notified that fin area of over three acres had been set aside as a gravel reserve in Block 7, Waitohu. ■ -L. V.. Vorry wrote declining to take over the clerkship, and stating his intention to remain in the Kiwilea Council’s employ. Ho had bean waited upon by. an influential deputation 'of councillors and ratepayers, who asked. him to consent to reappointment, and he felt it would be an injustice to leave his old council. He was; placed in an awkward fix. and so finally placed himself in the hands of tho council. In many ways, ho regretted being unable to accent the Borowhenna Council’s offer, but ho had been solidly opposed by his old council. He regretted the council did not respect his wish that the; business be taken in committee. Press reports were in the hands of councillors ■ before he had tendered his resignation. Norman Campbell wrote stating he pus willing ,to bridge a stream at iPaddou’s bend .to carry a ten-ton load, and mate necessary excavation and formation to put the road in order for traffic for the. sum of £BO. —Left to the engineer and councillors for the riding. Catley—Stephenson—That the owners of tho lands benefited by tho drains that are made, from the swamp in Monckton and Addington’s subdivision to the Mangaoue stream be requested to at once clean that portion of the drains that abut on their lands. Kebble—Better—That Mr Grace Roera be informed, that if ho does not comply with the instructions of the engineer regarding the 'access' to his section on the Mnhnnon. West road, he will be prosecuted. The council met in Committee to-con-sider the appointment of a clerk. There were some 75 applications, including leading accountants., clerks, etc., Irotn Both- North and South. Islands, also school teachers, labourers, etc. .‘After long consideration tho appointment :of Mr P. W. Goldsmith, at present clerk to the Levin Borough Council was announced.
