RED CROSS WORK

APPEAL FROM BRITAIN. ; The following communication was received from His Excellency the Governor yesterday: . J ■ I have received a telegram from the Marauis of Lansdowne, K.C., informing me that in view of the growing demand both in Franc© and the Near East, it is necessary to make a general appeal for assistance in money for Red Cross purposes, and he has, therefore, asked me whether this Dominion will assist, in company with all the other dependencies of the Crown, in organis : ing street and other collections throughout New Zealand on October 1 21st. The money received from this general appeal will be devoted entirely to relieving our sick and wounded, soldiers and sailors from Home and overseas at the various seats of war. Lord Lansdowne goes on to say;— j

“From all parts of the King’s Dominions wc have already received generous assistance in onr work ; but with the increase of British and overseas forces at the Rent there is a corresponding increase in our expenditure, and we shall be truly grateful to you if you will help us by organising an appeal for the object which I have named. Their Majesties the King and Queen and Her Alajesty Queen Alexandra are giving their gracious patronage, and I trust that you will also be able to see your way to help us.” I accordingly consulted my Ministers on the question and they concurred in the proposal to lay this telegram before the people of these islands ; while gladly according the patronage and support asked for, by Lord Lansdowne, I desire to make it clear that this emanates from the United Kingdom. No goods in kind arc called for. - All contributions should be sent to the Undersecretary for Internal Affairs, Wellington. and T will then, according to the instructions, give directions for the amounts to "be forwarded to St. John’s Gate, London, while at the same time informing His Majesty the -King, (Signed) Liverpool,- Governor. -
