PETONE AFFAIRS
MEETING- OF THE COUNCIL. Th o fortnightly meeting of the Polono Borough Council was held lastnight. There were present; The Major (Mr J. W. McEwan) add Councillors Cox, Brocklebank, Anderson, McDougall, McKenzie, Jones and Trueman. Permission was granted the Petone Fire Brigade ro hold its annual competition on the Recreation Ground on Labour Day in conjunction with the carnival. - In referring to the half-yearly bal-ance-sheet. the Mayor stated that though the general account showed an increased debit of £3482, the evpendituro had keen kept within the estimates, and if care were exercised the position should bo satisfactory at the end of the year. The water works maintenance account was sound, while the gasworks fund . showed a small credit balance of £l7 6s lid, after £6OO had boon transferred to other accounts. . In regard to the sewerage loan expenditure, there was available for use the sum of £19,408. This should be ample •to • complete the works; if it were not, there would be some: serious questions to answer. He considered that sunder the . circumstances the position was very satisfactory,' but it would be well to- go slow until the money market - improved all round. The St. David’s Cricket Club was granted a wicket on the Recreation Ground for tho ensuing season free of charge. In acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the council, suggesting that ton acres of the Wilford Estate bo set -aside as a reserve, the Department of Internal Affairs advised that tho matter had . been referred to the Lands Department to deal with. The borough engineer (Mr A.Cowie), in -his monthly report, stated that the -usual routine work had been gone on with; and all : sumps and manholes bad been cleaned out. ■ Satisfactory progress had been made in the work of ’ improving the. beach, while the erection of dressing sheds was nearly completed. Building permits for three dwellings had been issued during the last month, of a total value of £1895.
