LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

DECISIONS BY THE COUNCIL,. The Lower Hutt Borough Council met last evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr H. Baldwin), Councillors Hobbs, McDougall, Clendon, Brassel, Carver, Meldrum, and Hodgins. The Eitzhcrbert terrace School was granted the ■ use of the recreation ground for school sports on November 3th. Mr J. H. Burr asked for withdrawal of caveat registered against certificate of title on a property' upon which the council had advanced a loan for drainage purposes. The request ivas granted. The borough engineer (Mr W. J. Roche) reported that the work at Ludlam crescent had , been completed at a total cost of £SO 14s 3d, the estimated cost being £49. Preparation had been made lor tarring several footpaths, the total area of which was 4350 square yards. The total cost w-as £55 13s 2d, which worked out at 3.07 d per square yard. Repairs had been effected to the hydraulic pump. The small petrol engine and centrifugal pump had been hired to the Public Works Department at Trontham to assist in unwatering a trench. Two connections had been made with ■ the: gas . mains, ' making : a total to date of 539. One permit had been issued under the drainage and sanitary by-laws, the total being 904. The gas committee’s report stated that the committee had carefully considered the engineer’s report on gas distribution for the year ending July 31st, 1915, as directed by resolution of the council, and recommended that the report bo adopted. Concerning the gas main and camp in Kata street, the committee recommended that the council inform the petitioners that-should five residents m that street undertake to become gas consumers' in the event of tho council deciding to lay a gas main, the council would be prepared to lay such main and erect a street lamp at the corner of Rata street in Gamp road.—The Mayor moved’ that tho Potouo Council be approached to put up a lamp in Wakefield street, and that tho Hutt borough -would put up ono in Wakefield, street. Councillor 'Meldrum seconded, ■ and the . motion was carried.—The report was then adopted. The works ■ committee recommended that tho plans and specifications for reading the Holworthy estate ho ap-. proved, on condition that water-mains be laid as provided for-in section ■ 116 (2) of the Public Works Act. and its amendments, and that the owners ho required to deposit with. the borough treasurer the amount of the borough engineer’s : estimate -of • ■ the cost of tarring and sanding the : footpaths, this work to be done by tho council, tho council agreeing to pay interest on the. ' amount so deposited until the tarring and. sanding be completed at the same rate as was paid on temporary loans. The, municipal buildings’, committee. recommended that the council should accept Mr Hawthorn’s offer of a five-years’ oleaso of the offices now in use as municipal offices at £l3O per annum j i provided the premises were renovated.—Tho reports' were adopted.
