MEDICAL REJECTIONS

THE DOCTORS AND RECRUITING.. The rejection of recruit* by the medical examiners on account of varicose veins was mentioned in. the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr A. Walker (Dunedin North). Many men- who were otherwise sound said Mr Walker, wore' being'rejected on account of slight varicose joins. The Defence Minister (Hon. J. Alien) said that it was purely a,.matter for th e medical authorities. If be overrode the doctors on a point of the kind he would bo incurring a very grave’responsibilitys indeed. Dr A. K. Newman (Wellington East) suggested that the Minister , should consult the medical authorities on the point. Many men were rejected improperly on account of varicose veins, although they wore quite fit to face a campaign. The Minister: “The matter has been looked into more than once, lam bound to accept the advice of General Henderson." Dr Newman: “He did not give youthat advice, did he?" The. Ministers “The bon.-gentleman seems to know more about it than I do." Mr Allen added that all the men who had varicose veins wore not rejected. Sorao were asked to hay* the trouble attended to. The standard of medical fitness was being watched, and would be altered if necessary. Mr T. A. H, Field (Nelson) mentioned that a committee of Nelson doctor* had protested against the rejection of the men mentioned.
