At the meeting of the Conciliation Council yesterday, during the hearing by Mr Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, of the dispute between the Grocers’ Assistants’ Union and the Master , Grocers’ Association, Mr J. Mackenzie, one of the workers’ assessors, said that all the Chinese in Wellington except two had'given up selling groceries in their greengrocers' shops, because they would otherwise have to shut on Saturday afternoons. They were taking up tobacco, .sweets, and biscuits instead. One of . tho two Chinese referred to had a shop in Courtenay place, and the other a shop in Cuba street. They had separate departments for groceries, and closed them on Saturday afternoons. • • The grocery departments had separate,! entrances, with a partition -cutting them off from the otbcr..parts of the shops.' “With a hole in between,” ; interjected a voice, amid laughter.' “Well,'’ said Mr Mackenzie, “if the inspector .finds them committing a breach they will got into trouble.”; A very enjoyable "smoke social” was tendered last evening by the Tramways Employees’ Union to members leaving for the front. The guests of the evening were In camp ; Messrs Newstead, Clifford, -Lusoombe and F. J. Smith. Galled up. for October 12th: Messrs McDougall, Fernandez, Tallintire, Dunlop, and White. Called up for October 19th : Messrs A. Couper, K. Brown, and J. Frazer. The toast list included “Parliament,” “The City Council,” “Our Boys at .the Flront," "Our Guedts,” “Our, • Army and Navy,” "Labour and the War.” Songs were sung by Messrs Foot, Norton-Taylor, Mills, Emery, Dunn, GE. James and Houchen. Mr McOillvary, the traffic manager, presented each of the guests with a blade razor with safety attachment, and wished them bon voyage and all health and prosperity on behalf of their comrades.
