In connection with. the Pctone recreation ground, the borough engineer reported at a meeting of the Petone Borough Council last night that the old trotting track had been ploughed up and prepared for grass seed.. All tho cricket pitches have been top dressed and are ready, for play, while the bowling green and tennis, courts have been considerably improved by the planting of a live hedge and sowing of more grass * seed. ■ The new paths, will soon bo completed, and water for watering purposes will be. installed. Swing-boats have been erected in tho recreation ground, and inquiries are being made for a polo for the “giant stride.” The matter of the censorship of cinematograph films was before ths Lower Hutt Bdroiigh Council last evening. A letter 1 was received from the secretary and organiser of tho New Zealand Catholic Federation, with reference to “the unwholesome and quasi-immoral nature of many of the picture shows in New Zealand, suggesting that,certain steps ho taken with a view of remedying this evil.” Councillor Meldrum raised objection to several pictures recently shown in the city. Councillor Clendon; stated that every time'he went to a pictureshow he- saw something objectionable . ffiie Mayor, Mr H. A. Baldwin, said that in his opinion one-third of the nictnres Exhibited should never l>q shown. Councillor McDongall con-’ gratulated the federation on the stand aken, saying that many lof the films ihowed an utter disregard to the sacrifice of life. It had a bad moral tendency,' especially on the youth qf the Dominion. He moved that the council intimate that it was in accord with the objections of the federation, and that a letter he written to the Minister urging the introduction of legislation to cope with the evil. In seconding the motion. Councillor Carver stated that many pictures had a tendency to change the lives of many young people. The motion was unanimously adopted.
