A member of the crew states: —“The submarine signalled: ‘Get into the boats. You can't get away.’ When this was not done, the submarine signalled: ‘lf you don’t want your lifeboats we will shoot them awar.’ That’s what the cowards ai<u Some of the crew were swimming for two hours and a half before they were picked up.” [The steamer Anglo-Californian. -was shelled by a submarine on the.Sth jiast. The captain made a daring and skilrul attempt to evade the enemy. Several shells struck the vessel and killed the captain and ten of the crew, while eight were wounded. A wireless “5.0.5.” message brought help, and the submarine disappeared. The steamer got to Queenstown. The AngioCalifornian is a steel steamer of 7333 tons gross, owned by the Nitrate Producers’ Company. Her port of registry is London. She was built in 1912.}
