REMAINING AT TRENTHAM
•THE SIXTH REINFORCEMENTS. WILL REMAIN UNTIL TUESDAY. The men belonging to the Sixth Infantry Reinforcements are still at Trentham camp, and will remain there until to-morrow, at any rate. The nominal strength of this force is about 1200 men, but a considerable section is either in hospital or on sick leave at the present time. Some confusion seems to have arisen with regardi'*'to the movements of the Sixth. Before the Government announced on Thursday night that the troops were to leave Trentham camp, an officer had been dispatched to select a camping ground for the Sixth at Bainessc, near Palmerston. On Saturday it was stated that the force was going to Tauherenikau, and yesterday two trains went out to Trentham to cqnvey the men to that spot. But the trains came back to Wellington empty. “The Sixth Infantry Reinforcements are still at Trentham,” said the Minister for Defence last night. “Colonel Gibbon saw them this morning, and he reports that they are perfectly happy and do not want to leave. Extra precautions have been taken against sickness. Contact has been one of the troubles at the camp, and wo have put four men into a tent instead of ten and twenty-five men into a hut. Only the new huts are being used. These men are quite happy and contented, and they are going to stay there until Tuesday.” "Trentham is the best camp in New Zealand, and it occupies as good a site for a camp as could be secured,” added the Minister in reply to a further question. “That is my opinion after all these experiences. There -are facilities and conveniences there which cannot be duplicated quickly elsewhere.”
