MAGISTRATE’S COURT

Yesterday’s police cases came before Mr D. G. A. Cooper, S.H. , Walter Egan was fined £3, ,in default a month’s imprisonment, for using obscene language in Manners street.

For drunkenness, Mary Sprowell was fined £2, or a week in prison, and was prohibited; Thomas Hastings was fined a similar, sum, Patrick O’Neill was fined 20s, or three days. Insobriety was the charge against an elderly woman, giving the name of Madame Eva Zola. She was indignant at being placed in the dock, and continually interrupted the evidence of the arresting constable. The magistrate fined her 10s, and a week was allowed to pay the money. Woollett, £9 11s 7d, costs £1 3s 6d; same v. Carl Roth, £l6 Os Bd, costs £2 Os 6d; £. L. Kiddiford v. G. G. Potts, £162 4s 2d, costs £7 11s. On judgment summonses, James Henry Wright was ordered to pay the New Zealand Express Co. £5 Is 3d by July 22nd, in default five days’ imprisonment ; Alfred John Hart to pay the Empire Loan Discount Co., Ltd. (in liquidation) £l2 5s 4d by July 22nd, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment ; D. G. Cook to pay the New Zealand Farmers’ Dairy Union £37 10s by July 22nd, in default thirty-seven days’ imprisonment. Judgment was given for plaintiff, with costs £2 6s, in the case of Frederick Charles Jones and H. O. Jones v. William Parker, a claim for £l4 10s and possession was granted by July 23rd.
