HON. C. J. JOHNSTON ELECTED SPEAKER. When the Legislative Council mot at 2.30 p.m. the leader (the Hon. Sir Francis'Boil) stated that the office of Sptek-' er had become vacant by effluxion of time. The Chairman of Committees (the Hon. IV. C. F. Carnoroes). as Act-ing-Speaker, therefore took the chair. Sir Francis! Bell gave notice of a bill entitled the •> New Zealand Society of Accountants Amendment Act. ' BILLS FROM THE HOUSE. The Trading with the Enemy Amendment and Regulation of Trade and Commerce Amendment Bills were received from the' House- of Representatives with request for concurrence.' 'EDUCATION ACT AMENDMENTThe Standing Orders were suspended to enable, the Education. Amendment Act to bo passed -through all stages. Sftr Eranpie Belli explained! that the object, of the measure was to allow elections by parents to take place in August instead of July. ~ ~• • The Hon. T.
