PATIENCE, SKILL AND HEROISM NEEDED
(Received July 8. 0.15 a.m.). LONDON, July 7. Sir Ian 1 Hamilton’s dispatch is one of the most important and nobly-worded documents in European history. It is now evident that it was impossible to land at Bulair, because the cliffs were too high and steep. The most northerly landing judged practicable was the spot at which the Australians and New Zealanders disembarked, and even there it was impossible to get ashore the heavy artillery supplies. The main force of the colonials scrambled ashore, and they remain a thorn * it the side of the Turks, but the principal army, with the heavy impedimenta, was bound to land at the extreme end of the peninsula an enterprise of extreme difficulty, but not a wild-cat scheme—and, with the exercise of patience, skill and heroism, those engaged may look for a final success.
