CANTERBURY CHESS CLUB v WELLINGTON CHESS CLUBV The annual twolve-aeifl© match by telegraph between the above clubs was commenced on Saturday evening, the local team occupying their room in the Y.M.C.A. building. Much interest is being taken in this fixture, and there was a good attendance of spectators. As on many previous occasions about halt an hour was lost in fixing up preliminaries, but play then proceeded briskly, and all the games' have, reached an interesting stage. Spectators who drop, in at the,club room next Saturday evening should see some fine finishes. The play 'so far has been very steady,, and gives no indication as to which side will win the match; The pairing is as follows, the name of the Canterbury player being given first in each instanceßoard ISeverne v. Barnes, the local captain, won the toss from Scverne, and Wellington thus has first move at the odd-numbered boards. The Barnes v. Seveme game is being played over the board, as the latter is spending his holidays here. Mr W. G. White, of Petone, i s umpiring for Canterbury and Mr \V. H. Messenger is umpiring for Wellington at Christchurch. Tlie operators are Messrs George Clark (Wellington) and H. J, Bennett (Christchurch!, who have acted so efficiently on previous occasions.
