MAORI CONTINGENT

REINFORCEMENTS TO BE SENT,

A conference was held on Saturday between the Minister for Defence (Hon. James Allen), Sir James Carroll, M.P., Mr T. Parata, M.P. for Southern Maori, the Hon. Dr Pomare, and Air T. E. Henheu Tukino, tho Taupo chief, to discuss matters relating to the Maori contingent. Mr Allen afterwards explained that the Army' Council m England had sugb sted to the New Zealand Government that the Maoris might be given an opportunity of going on active service after two months’ training, and asked whether sufficient reinforcements would be available. The conference decided that the suggestion should be acted on and send reinforcements as far as possible. The opinion, was expressed that between 600 and 700 natives would be available -within the next eight months. They will be trained at Auckland. The Maoris now at Malta will- probably go into the firing line in a couple of mouths, perhaps less.
