UNEMPLOYMENT
SATISFACTORY CONDITIONS PREVAILING. According to the returns for tho week ended May Bth which have been received by the Department of Labour, employment is by no means scarce in the Dominion as a whole.' No applications for work from unemployed were received in Gisborne, Palmerston, North, Mastcrton. Nelson, Greymouth, Timaru, and Invercargill, while only tw'O were received in Oaniaru and four in Wanganui. In Dunedin twenty-six men sought work through the good offices of the department. Sixteen of these wore general labourers. Seventeen men wore assisted to: employment. In Christchurch there wore also twenty-six applicants,, who included twenty general labourers. Three were placed. , In Wellington during tho period under review 73 applications (54 from general labourers) for .work camp in, and 59 of the applicants found employment. Auckland seems to be the only centre where conditions are not so satisfactory. During the week 141 applications were received, of which no less than 114 were from unskilled labourers. There is not much unemployment in the skilled trades. Forty-three of the applicants were placed, ii 4 with the; Government and 9. privately. There are many vacancies for labourers oh Dio public works in tho northern district, but, as is -the case in Wellington to a lesser degree, married men are not willing to leave the city. The officers in*tho Employment Bureaux advise all single men seeking work to submit themselves to medical examination at the Defence Office with a view to joining the expeditionary force. ;
