SOUTHERN MEAT TRADE EMPHATIC PROTEST AGAINST SPACE ALLOCATION. Press Association. CHRISTCHU TICH, May 13. The Now Zealand Overseas Shipowners’ Committee hav ! c written to the general manager of tint' Christchurch Moat Company, Ltd., advising that the committee have allotted space for 138,000 freight carcases.’ for Juno and July loading, subject to' the arrival ol the Rangatira, Paparoa., Kia Ora, .Vtlienic, ftemuera, Ojiaara, Tonganro, inti La Blanc. The committee hoped in a few weeks’ time tci' bo in a position to allot space iu July-August iteamers. ■ Mr W. Murray, general manager ol the Christchurch Meat Company, replied to tho above to-day follows. "‘Wo have to acknowledge receipt ot your favour of the 12th bust., in which you allot us .space for 13tf,000 freight carcases for June-July loa ding, subject to the arrival of eight steamers, which you name. Judging from the information supplied, to us os to the movements of these vessels, your allotment has to serve our fit’® factories for the whole of J une ai i,d probably for most of July. It ’iff doubtful, therefore, whether it can mi any way bo regarded as an improvenaent on the entirely inadequate provis ion which you made for this present inonth of Slay, and which, as you are aware, has resulted ‘ in the entire- disl pcation ol the export business in Canterbury and Otago, as the freight ailotedv tp us, it made on an equitable basis i, means that the whole South Is Uind can only ’have received space for about ,275,000 freight carcases. W a feel, in view of the fact that eight ‘steamers are available,' according to yoi or letter, that this is entirely inadequate provision. It further seems to show an absolute disregard on the port of your committee of the gravity of the position in Canterbury and Ota pa, in spite of the many representations Which have been placed before .y ou. It is therefore our duty to one© more record our most emphatic protest .against your (allocation, which will Irxirther accentuate the disastrous position at present existing.’ ’ j
