MR J. G. HARKNESS BEATEN AGAIN.

COUNTRY MEMBER HEARTILY CONGRATULATED.

The annua] meeting of the Welling* ton Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon. There were present Messr*. Robert Fletcher (retiring chairman)* A. H. Hindmarsh, R- A. Wright, J* u. Harkness, C. W. Jones, H. L. Na*s than, W. Cable, J. W. McEwan, J« Cobbe, A. McFarlane, R. E. C. E. Daniel, and M. Cohen, and Captain D. J. Watson. The chairman offered his hearties# congratulations to the members win* bad been returned and to tho new mem* bors of the board, Messrs Sinclair rnA Cable.

The principal business at_ tho meeto mg was the election of chairman, and the following were nominated: Mr C. W. Jones, by Captain Watson and Mr Hindmarsh; Mr C. B. Daniel. by Messrs McEwan and MoFarlane; and Mr J. G. Harkness, by Messrs Wright and Cable. A_balot between; these three resulto* as follows: ■ For For For Daniell. Harkness. Jones. A fresh'ballot was then taken' bo* tween Messrs Daniell and Harkness, which resulted:— For For' Daniell (9). ' Harkness (5). Cobbe Cable Cohen , Nathan Fletcher Sinclair Hindmarsh Wright Jones Harkness. McEwan MoFarlane Watson Daniell. ’ Mr Fletcher duly declared Mr Daniell elected, and welcomed him to the chair. Mr C. W. Jones said that naturally he felt a little disappointed at tho_ result. * There was probably something, however, in what Mr McEwan had said, that it was perhaps somewhat inadvisable for a member representing one particular section to sit in the chair. Of course, ho understood that there was nothing personal in Mr McEwan’a romark. ■ S Mr McEwan; “No, no I Mr Jones added that ho had not known' until that morning that Mr Daniell was going to stand. Had ho known it before he would certainly have not. boon a candidate. Ho had a great deal of personal regard for Mr Daniel, and he heartily congratulated him. Mr Daniell said that he thanked the members fox the honour they had done him. He had not sought the office; in fact, ho had not even sought office as a member of the board, but the Wai« rarapa people had thought otherwise. Ho was not after any glory in tho position; it was a business proposition to him, and what ho did would bo douo not for himself but for tho board, “NOT DISCOURAGED.” Mr Harkness said that ho had on several occasions occupied the samo position as he did then, but hes was not discouraged. He congratulated tho newly-clocted chairman, and said ho would give him loyal support. Mr Fletcher, in congratulating Mr Daniel, said that he bad always considered the board one of the most important pubic bodies iu the Dominion. Mr Daniell’s elevation to the chair was a high compliment to tho , people of tho Wairarapa, and ho was sure that his capabilities as a business man would make him a successful chairman. (Ap plausc.) Other members endorsed this view, and offered their congratulations to the chairman.

The standing committees were re* elected, Messrs Cable and Sinclair replacing the old members, Messrs Trevor and Kennedy, in each ease. . Messrs Fletcher, Harkness, Hindmarsh, and the chairman, were appoint ed a finance committee.
