Mr H’. E. Lodge, county clerk, Levin, has offered his services with tho expeditionary' forces. At the Horowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday, it was resolved that six months’ leave of absence bo granted Mr Lodge to join the forces, on the understanding that, if necessary, further leave will bo granted. ■

During the sitting of the Masonic Grand Lodge yesterday, a presentation was made by the Grand Master te U.W. Bro. J-l. H. Seaton, on behalf of the 'Wellington Board of Inquiry. It consisted of an illuminated address expressive of appreciation of bis service* as secretary of the board for the last ten. years, accompanied by a silver tea and coffee service and salver for Mrs Seaton.

M. do Martens, a distinguished Belclan visitor to the Dominion, and who is at present in Christchurch, is ' a major in the Belgian army and will leave Auckland by the Niagara on. May 18th to rejoin his regiment at Havre, France. M. Martona had previously retired from the army because he was above the age limit, but that limit has now been extended, and he is eligible to fight. ' A pleasant little function was held at Messrs E. W. Mills and Co.’s warehouse yesterday afternoon, to honour Mr E. W. Gibb, on the becaffioii of hia having completed fifty years’ continuous service with the firm. Several of' tho directors of the company were present, and the manager (Mr C. A.Briggs) occupied the chair. Mr Gibb was warmly congratulated upon the capable and efficient manner in which he had always attended to his duties. The manager, in paying a tribute to Mr Gibb’s long and faithful service, said that the directors also wished to express their gratitude, and on their behalf he presented Mr Gibb with a gold watch suitably inscribed, and a grant of six months’ leave of absence on full pay, while from his fellowworkers he had much pleasure in presenting him with a travelling trunk, rug, and deck chair. ■'A handsome oak salvor, with silver mountings, and two silver photo frames, a gift to Mrs Gibb from the employees, was then presented by Mr J.
