HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, July 11th. (Note. —Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) : —■

Mutton.—There has been a better tone in the market this week. The demand has been chiefly for light wight, Canterbury, 4|d per lb for light weight. There is a better demand for heavy weight at 3 13-16 d on account of Higher prices of chilled beef. North Island mutton, 4|d per lb for light weight. Lamb. —There ;a a bettor demand for light 'weight: There is a dull sale for heavy carcases of lamb. The chief feature in the market is the demand for light weight, oven it quality' is very poor. Canterbury, twos, 6Jd per lb;'heavy weights, fours, 5Jd. Other than Canterbury, 6 3-16 d for light weight. Beef.—-There is a bettor demand for beef. New Zealand hinds; 4fd per lb; fores, 3ld; chilled hinds, 6d; fores, 3Jd. Butter. —The market is firmer. Danish, steady, per cwt, 122 s to 1245; Now Zealand, nominal, 114 s to 118 s; unsaltcd, 116 s to 120 s; Australian, 106 s to 108 s; Siberian, in good domahd 102 s to 104 s; Irish creamery, 112 s to 114 s.

Cheese. —The market as steady. Canadian, quiet market, per owt, 63s to 645; New Zealand white, in good demand, 60s to 665; coloured, 63s to 64s 6d ; English cheddar, firm market, 70.4 to 745; Siberian, 52s to 565. > Hemp.—The market is rather more active, especially for Manila. There is a slight rise in prices all round. Manila: Fair current, per ton, £26; forward shipment about the same; the output from Manila for the week was 16,000 bales. Now Zealand: Goodfair, per ton, £25 10s; fair, £23 10s; forward shipment about the same prices. Stock of Now Zealand at June 30th: Hemp, 833 tons; tow, 365 tons.

Scheelite.— Mines: Blackwell, quotation, ’July 4th, £1 10s 6d per unit.
