BROWN SHIELD MATCH
CANTERBURY DEFEATS WiESTLAND. Press Association.
CHRISTCHURCH, Juno 3. The Cantorbory-Weetland Brown Shield match .was played , i hero today. Canterbury kicked off, and exchanges wore at once exciting; the ball being carried into the homo territory. Fullarton was early conspicuous. Can-1 terbury transferred, play. ‘ Reid took the first corner for the home team, but although nicely sent: across it wascleared. Reid again showed , fine 'form, and Ward was presented with a good l opening, but his shot was well covered by Morton, who was hurt in clearing. A good run up the field by Ward, who centred, found JSorman mulling his middle by Grant, who was handy, and scored with a good cross-shot. A spell of pressing by Westland followed, but the home backs were safe. Ross was playing well in the centre-half position for the visitors, keeping the ball swinging about. Westland were having a full share of the game until Anderson was penalised for off-side. A fine run on the home team’s left found Wallace alert, .and he was not giving anything away. Johnson initiated a smart passing run, which was nullified by tho wet ball causing the pass to go astray. Norman should hereabouts have scored from two good chances, but his efforts were weak. Crompton was playing well at right half for the visitors, and theywere showing glimpses of good football. Grant tried another shot, but Morton was proving himself a safe custodian. Fullarton essayed a solo run, but was stopped by Ross. Bennett was kept busy, three shots in rapid succession being fired in, but ho was well in the picture. Clay and Biss.ett combined nicely, and the latter player scored a beautiful goal with a first-time shot. On' resuming Baker cleared the home "lines with a high kick. Fullarton was conspicuous, and dribbled past the opposition before transferring to Norman, A spell of pressing by Canterbury was relieved by Johnson getting away, but Ward was sent away on a good wing run, and terrific pressure was set upon the visitors' lino bnt proved abortive. At half-time tho scores stood: Canterbury 2, Westland 0. Tho game was resumed in torrents of rain. Canterbury immediately forced a- comer. Grant put in a clover shot, which was cleared, and Norman tried Morton subsequently with another hot shot. Canterbury were pressing heavily, and wore good value for an addition to their score. Bisseitt sent in a fast shot, which Morton cleared well. The homo loam’s combination was far superior to the visitors’, and a good understanding existed among tho whole team. The atrocious weather was putting a damper on-all present. Grant was showing up well, and a fast, high shot from him found the net. A discussion here ensued, the Westland team wishing to quit the field on account of the conditions, but the : game was resumed, Westland being three men short, playing the one-back game. Bissett broke away, and a. fine run half the length of the field found him placing the ball in Morton’s hands with his final effort. . The referee then abandoned the game, with tho score three goals to nil m Canterbury’s favour.
