A DOMINION AWARD WANTED,

The Federated Cooks and Stewards’ Union of New Zealand is applying for a new award in connection with

the Union Steam Ship Company’s steamers. The dispute will come before the Conciliation Council on Thursday next at 10.30 a.m., and tho following demands have been filed: — WAGES. Tho wages asked for are as follow: —Galley AA’orkers. —\ T ancouver and ’Frisco Service: Chefs £lB per month, second cooks £ll, extra second cooks £9, third cooks £B, extra third cooks £7 10s, scullerymen £7, baker £l2 10s. second baker £9 10s, third baker £7, butcher £lO, second butcher £7 10s, third butcher £7, steerage cook £lO, second steerage cook £B. third steerage cook £7, crew cook £9, assistant crew cook £7. Intercolonial and Islands: Chefs £l6 per month, second cooks £lO 10s, extra second cooks £9, third cooks £7 10s, extra third cooks £7 10s, scullerymen £7, baker £l2, second baker £7. butcher £lO, assistant butcher £7, crew cook £9, assistant crew cook £7. Stewards; Second steward £lO pei month, stewards in charge second sa loon, three classes, £9 10s; fore-cabin steward, £9; pantryman, £8 10s; linenkeeper, £8 10s; head waiter, £3 10s; storekeeper, £8 10s; first-class assistant stewards, employed as bedroom steward, saloon waiter, printers, and buglers employed in either saloon where only threb classes are carried, or in first saloon where only two classes are carried, £8; night watchman, £8; other workers not classified, £7; cadets, £2 10s.HOURS OF WORK, The schedule demands that the hours of work for galley workers while in port shall not exceed 10 per day—oolhers between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. in all ports and passenger boats in terminal ports 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; intermediate ports from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The hours of work at sea not to exceed 10 per day, to be worked within a margin of 14 consecutive hours daily. All time worked in excess of 10 hours in any one day to be paid for at the overtime rotes of Is per hour. For stewards it is asked that the hours of labour in intermediate ports and at sea. shall be 10 per day between 5.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. Men required to go on duty before or after these hours shall do so as required subject to being paid overtime at the rate of Is per hour for all time worked in excess of 10 hours in any day, or for any time worked after 15 hours from the commencement of work. In terminal ports where a vessel has been in port overnight tho hours of labour for stewards on days following shall bo eight, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. When a vessel leaves a terminal port after the men have completed eight hours’ work, any time worked in excess to be paid for at overtime rates. When a. vessel arrives in a terminal port .prior to 3 p.m. work shall pease for the day at 5 p.m. In terminal ports when a vessel is not proceeding to sea prior to 7 p.m., or is lying in port overnight, tea shall be served at 5 p.m. to the whole of the officers and crew. Any meals served or work done after 6 p.m. to bo paid for at overtime rates. EXCURSIONS. The clans©, in addition to specifying that overtime of Is per hour shall be paid, with a minimum of 4s (as provided in. the present award) asks that if ■ the men are ordered aboard for an excursion and tho vessel does not proceed, each man shall bo -cntitled to a minimum of 4s, PREFERENCE WANTED. Tho present clause stipulates that the employer, in employing cooks and stewards, shaE . not discriminate against members of the union, and shall not, in tho engagement hr dismissal of mon» or in the conduct of its business, do anything directly or indirectly for the purpose of injuring the union, and, further, when members of the union and non-members are employed 'together there shall he no distinction between them, and both shall work together in harmony and under the same conditions, and shall receive equal pay for equal work. In place of this clause it is demanded that employers shall in the engagement or subsequent employment of workers, give preference to those, members of the Federated Cooks . and Stewards’ Union of. New Zealand who are not more than three months m arrears with their contributions to the union. , / A Dominion award is asked tor to cover a period of two years.
