. DECISIONS BY THE COUNCIL. The Onslow Borough Council meeting last night was attended by the Mayor (Mr C. C. Crump), Councillors B. Lynneberg, L. A. Browne, C. Mouro, R. A. Niool. A. H. Ho by, D. Munro, E. C. Aldcrson and C. Bowden. Upon the recommendation of the public works committee, it was decided to inform the Municipal Association that the council is of opinion that the limit of “unauthorised expenditure’’ should be raised from 1 per, cent, to 2 per cent, of the general rate,’ as suggested by the Auckland City Council. ___ Councillor Lynneberg moved: "That with regard to complaints about recent repairs to part of Motueka street, Ngaio, the road foreman be instructed to do the best he can to meet the representations of the users rf the road.’’—This was agreed to. The following motion, by Councillor Bowden, was carried': "That the road foreman be authorised to make tho best arrangements be can with Mr F. Richardson for some chips from the Porima road quarry for the purpose of blinding the j new metal on the Gorge road."

A motion by Councillor Hoby: "That the engineer in tho estimates for the current year a sum for the improvement of the north-west corner of York avenue. Khandallah.” was carried. It was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Hoby to adopt tho report of the reserves committee in respect to tho planting of the catchment area ridges. Councillor C. Monro moved : “That the council take into consideration, with a view to immediate action, the question of widening tho Kaiwarra Gorge road 1 bv twelve feet, commencing at the tannery and finishing at the brow of the hill.” Councillor Lynneberg said they would have to cart every bit of spoil away from this road. The engineer would have to furnish an estimate, which would cost at least £25, and be asked who was go j ' to pay for it. He thought it a waste of time to consider such a matter, and ho would not support it. Councillor Alderson said that if the motion were altered to provide for the improvement of all the roads and placed before the ratepayers, he believed it tv mild meet with considerable support.

Th motion was defeated. Councillor Alderson moved: "That in view of the recent disastrous fire at Khandallah some method be brought forward of minimising such risks to householders." He said that during the last five years house property to the -value of £7500 had been lost through fire in lihe borough. Councillor Brown seconded the motion. Ho said he was in favour of striking a special rate for the purchase of a firo extinguisher. On the suggestion of Councillor Lynne* berg. Councillor Alderson moved: “That a committee consisting of Councillors Colin Monro, Nicol and I). Monro, with the mover, be formed to discuss the matter and bring it up in concrete form at the next meeting."—Carried. A motion by Councillor Alderson to the cSeet that the council give its support and assistance, towards the establishment of a gymnasium at Khandallah for the benefit of the, youths and young men of the district, was held over until next meeting.
