FIRE AT SHANNON

TWO BUILDINGS DESTROYED. Special to the “ Times.” SHANNON, May 21. A fire occurred hereshorly a tier 2 o’clock this morning, when it was discovered that Mr Merwood’s refreshment rooms were alight. The flames quickly spread to an adjoining billiard saloon, occupied by Mr Gcorgo Hook, the front part of which was used byMr L. M. Jenkins, saddler, who was burnt out about lifteen months ago. Mr Richardson’s butcher’s shop was also burnt. Nothing was saved from any of the shops. Merwood, Hook, and Richardson arc uninsured. The buildings were the property of Mrs Curran, and were insured for £2OO and £l5O respectively in the Norwich Union and New Zealand offices. The temporary premises of the Bank of New Zealand had a narrow escape, the windows being cracked by the heat; otherwise it was not damaged much.
