NOTES ON THE RACING

Special to the “ Times.

WANGANUI, May 21. It is safe to say that worse weather conditions have never been experienced on any race day than those which prevailed to-day on the occasion of the opening of the "Wanganui Jockey Cmb s winter meeting. Last evening there wa«; everv prospect of line weather, but a change in the wind brought ram, which fell steadily all the morning, while a gale sprang up from the southwest and it was bitterly cold. Notwithstanding a good crowd braved the elements, and were rewarded by witnessing some splendid racing, the fields being large,. and the sport of a most interesting description. The feature of the day’s racing was the remarkable victory gained by Jackman in the big steeplechase. The Handsome Jack gelding took the lead shortly after the start and, gradually opening up a gap, had a load of nearly 100 yards before they had gone halfway. He was jumping beautifully and never gave anything a chance of getting near Mm, and eventually won by over

a chain, pulling up. It was probably the easiest win ever seen in the history of the race, and as there wore some good jumpers behind him and they got round safely, the winner must bo oao of the best cross-country horses

wo have seen out for a long time. Probably tho state of the going help cd him against tho heavier-weighted horses, but still it was a fine performance -to win the way he did. Bercola ran a fair race, and beat Riro Atu rather easily at the end, for second place. Te Whetu lost Ins rider at tho double brush the second time round, and Morihiko came to grief hall a mile from homo, otherwise the jumping was very good all through. Glcnmoro ran well for two miles, but tired over the last half-mile. The race should do both him and Kauroa good. Riro Atu was second or third all the way, and must have a chance in the Great Northern.

Tbo start lor tho opening event, the Borough Handicap, wais ah indifferent one, Sanguinary and,the Great Mogul getting away particularly well. The former ran a good race, but when tho favourite Postillion made his effort at the turn into tho straight, lie shot to the front without any trouble apd galloped home an easy winner in tho fast time (in soft going) of Imin 15 3-ssec. Esptic carried most money in the Hack Steeplechase, but though ho made a bold bid for victory, bo had to bo content with second place behind Silver Monarch, which camo fast over the last two furlongs. Tho jumping was good, there being no falls, though Waterworks struck a fence half a mile from home, and was nearly down. This mishap may have lost him the race, as he was- going well at the time. Gondolier struck himself on Monday, when being schooled, and this led to him being withdrawn from his engagements to-day, though tho injury is not serious.

Those who backed Jackman in tho big event got a fright after the race, when it was learnt that according to the totalisator clock, the starter had lot the field away some three minutes before time. It was thought that the race would have to ho re-run, but after the stewards bad considered the matter it was decided to let the result stand, since tho evidence showed that the starter’s watch made it out to bo half a minute after time when the race starter, and it was held that this was correct.

There were nine starters in the Hack Hurdles. Kurnalpi was made favourite, hut tho best he could do was to run fourth. The winner turned up in Parawauui, who was in front all the way. Sweet Breeze ran surprisingly well, and paid a decent price for second place. Waldemar was running well until he struck a hurdle hard, and came a terrible cropper, H. Ward receiving a nasty injury on the head, but it was not. serious.

Darby Paul was scratched for the Century Hurdles, for which Huia was a strong eleventh-hour tip and carried most money. Ho was in th© lead most of the way, but tired badly towards the end and came a nasty cropper at the last hurdle, bringing over Master Tupuhi. G. Marchant, the rider of the former, had his collar-bone , broken, but the other lad got off lightly. Player was in a good position all the way, and was handled nicely by Flynn, who brought him along over the last quarter of a mile with a .good run, coming down with Cornelian and Goodwin Park, who were battling together in the lead. The Sabretache gelding won with a bit in hand, and was evidently a trifle fitter than Goodwin Park. The latter shaped well, and would probably/have won had he had a race or two into him. Cornelian was going well half a mile from home, when he hit a hurdle hard. Aruako was close up all the way, and finished a good fourth. He might have done better but for hitting a hurdle hard a mile from home. It was a splendid race, quite one of the best in the history of the event. Eleven went to the post in the Connolly Handicap, Bertrada being the most fancied, with First Consul next in demand; but it was a good betting race. Settler, which carried three pounds over-weight, was in front early, and kept- command until the turn into the straight. Here Leonta, Red Book and Cheddar were closo together, and a ding-dong finish saw Red Book get the by half a length from Loonta. Mauiaroa just beat Goldsisc for third place. Rewi Potoa was fifth. Tho fine field of fifteen started in the concluding event, the PuruaHack, for which -Rady Elgiva was tho popular pick, with Master Lupin and Square Deal next in order of favouritism. The favourite was never prominent, Master Lupin winning rather comfortably from Square Deal and Styrax, with Princess Moutba fourth. WEIGHTS FOR SECOND DAT.
