FIRE IN AUCKLAND

HOUSE DESTROYED; MAGAZINE THREATENED. Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 20. A six-roomed house belonging to the Government, and occupied by Captain Mickle, the officer in charge of the Permanent Artillery, Auckland division, was completely destroyed by lire at tho North Head to-night. All of the contents were practically destroyed. The furniture was insured in the Commercial Union for £250. Tho loss is estimated at £4OO. Whether the house is insured by the Government or not is uncertain. The dwelling was valued at £6OO. Tho building was within one hundred yards of the main magazine of tho forts, and this created alarm in tho neighbourhood. A gang of artillerymen was employed in covering the ventilators of tho magazine and preventing the ingress, of any sparks. Captain Mickle states that tho cordite stored in the magazine was in such form that there was no danger.
