LATE MRS TOWNEND’S ESTATE.

CHRISTCHURCH, May 20. _ After providing for a number of prt. vfltc legacies', the late Annie iownendj relict of Dr Townend, left the following amounts to public institutions. > Ten thousand pounds for the relief of distressed gentlewomen; £SOOO to the church property trustees for clergymen with stipends of under £3OO a year ; £SOOO for the Cruelty Prevention Society in the Isle of Man; £SOOO for the chief charitable institution in the Isle of Man; £SOOO for the Christchurch Society for the Prevention of Cruelty; £4OOO for the Hospital Visitors* Association; £4OOO for the Citizens’ Benevolent Association; £4OOO for the Children’s Convalesent Cottage at Now Brighton; £IOOO for the Barnardo Homes; £IOOO for the Cashmere Hills Sanatorium; and lessor amounts for the Salvation Army, Horticultural Society, District NnrsinJ Fund, and Prison Gate Mission. LOVE FOR ANIMALS. Special to the “Times/* Apropos of tho late Mrs Townond** bequest of £SOOO to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Christchurch and £3OOO for tho Association of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the parish of Melew in the Hie of Man, tho story of her distress at the death of a favourite cocker spaniel is capped by another story of her affection for a greyhound that she owned at Glenmark some years ago. The animal used to sleep in her own room and had silk coverlets and eiderdown quilts .and other unusual comforts. When H die*l Mrs Townend had a full-sized marbla statue of the dog, on a marble base, erected over its grave and the statue xa said to be there at the present day. Mrs Townend was also very solicitous about tho waifs and strays of the sheep flocks. If a lamb was injured m the railway truck or in any other way sha used to have it put aside and brought up as a pot on the fat of the land-
