Louis Braille, the inventor of the wonderful system which has “almost made the blind to see.” was born near Paris in- January, 1809, and lost his sight through an accident at the ago of three. He was admitted to the famous Institution Nationals des Jeuncs Avcuglos, founded by Valentin Hauy in 1784, and displayed such intelligence that at sevcntecen he was elected a professor. Before be was twenty ho had sot himself to invent a rneana whereby the blind should be able not only to read but to write, and the result of years of patient lalour was the beautiful system which bears his name-
