BRICKLAYERS’ DEMANDS
A PARTIAL SETTLEMENT. Mr P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, presided at a meeting of tho Conciliation Council yesterday to consider the claims of the Wellington Bricklayers’ Union. Messrs W. Ferguson, W. H. Bennett, and A. M. AVil- . son were -assessors, and Mr \V- A. Grenfell agent for tho masters, while Messrs W. E. Gibson, A. McMahon, and H. Hanton were the assessors, and Mr J. Gressier agent for the union. It was agreed that the award should expire with the carpenters’ award, on December 16th, 1916, and its scope is to be within 25 miles of Wellington. It was impossible to reach an agreement on the wages question or on the matter of preference. The men demanded Is 9d per hour as against the present wage offered by' the employers—ls 7d per hour. The follow, mg conditions were agreed to :—A week’s work is to consist of forty-four hours, as in the case of the carpenters’ award. A worker, if dischargod, is to receive 15 minutes’ notice. Piece work is prohibited and labour is not to be sublet. The counter-proposals of the employers with regard to apprentices were agreed to,' viz, that apprentices to get os per week increase for the first four years and 10s per week increase for the fifth. Foremen are not obliged to become members of the union. Suburban and country work conditions are to be on the lines of vhe carpenters’ award, and the overtime and holidays clauses of the carpenters’ award is to take effect.
