FLOODED RIVERS
GISBORNE ENVIRONS INUNDATED. FAMILIES DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOMES. Press Association. GISBORNE, May 19, 9.20 a.m. The storm continues, after a very boisterous night, but the rain is now lighter. The flood waters have subsided about twelve inches, but still cover the Poverty Bay Flats and have entered many houses. Inst night the flood reached within a few yards of the Makaraka Hotel (four miles from town), where a number of families havo taken refuge. At Nelson Bros.’ freezing works the water rose to within twelve inches of tho 1910 record, and the stokehole in the boiler house was knee-deep ■ in water.
