The Public Service Commissioner announced yesterday tuat Mr C. E. Archibald, chief clerk in tho New Plymouth office of the Lands and Survey Department, has been appointed chief clerk at Dunedin. Mr A. N. Harrop, district surveyor, Westland, is to take up the position of chief draughtsman in the Hokitika office of the department, and Mr A. D. Burns, of Bleu-, , heim, has been appointed chief . draughtsman at Nelson. Prior Spence, director of the Do- ‘ minican Order in Adelaide, has been’" appointed Coadjutor-Archbishop of that city. Ho spoko at Fraukton last Tuesday, at Hamilton on Wednesday, at Patea on. Thursday, and at Whaogamomona on, Friday. • At each place he was heartily received, and votes of confidence in the Liberal party wore carried, unanimous-, ly. Considerable enthusiasm was also., displayed. The audience at Whangamomoaa, for instance, included many people who had travelled miles specially to hear the address. Mr Atmore ’ left Wellington for the south by th*Wahine last night. There died at Vogel town on Sunday,, after a brief illness, Mr Patrick Grieve,,, Howden, who had been a resident of,, Wellington for over thirty years. The,, deceased was born in Edinburgh* seventy-three years ago. Upon comple—tion of his education he secured a posi-“ tion in the Cunard Steamship Com-" pany’s service. He settled in the Argentine for some time, and left South America thirty-six years ago to come to New Zealand. Ho was in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company for four years, and then took' up his residence permanently in Wellington, joining his brother, Mr D. 11. Howden, on Iho proprietary of the Wellington Biscuit Company. The deceased gentleman was the first chairman of the Yogeltown school committee. He left a widow and a family. of one son (now at sea), and six daughters. Two are married, one to Mr D. Pears, of the Waikato, ond the other to Mr C. E. Webb, of Hataitai road.
