WELLINGTON WORKING MEN’S CLUB. The annual general meeting of the above club’s chess and draughts players was held on Monday evening, twenty-one members being present. Mr J. Milesi presided. Tho annual report, of which a resume was given in our last Monday’s issue, was adopteu. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, E. Mace; vicepresidents, Messrs'P. Woods, J. Miles: and J. G. W. Dalrymple; referee for chess, A. G, Fell (of the Wellington C.C.); referee for draughts, J. Leggatt; Iron, treasurer, James Wilson, hon. secretary, F. K. Kclling; assistant lion, secretary, J. P. Key; consulting members, Messrs Barnes and Burgess for chess, and Messrs Erickson and J. Reid for draughts; match committees, Messrs Barnes, Eton and J. Reid for chess, and Messrs Erickson, J. Reid and James Wilson for draughts; delegates to N.Z. Chess Association, Messrs J. G. *W. Dalrymple and J. Milesi. The 'New Zealand Chess Association having invited nominations for the position of vice-presi-dent representing the southern half of tho North Island, it was unanimously decided to nominate Mr Dalrymple, who has been one of the club’s delegates to the association for tho past six years. It was decided to hold annual handicap tournaments on the usual lines, entries to close on the 31st instant. A suggestion by Mr J. Reid that a championship shield bo obtained for competition in the draughts section (where the play is on championship linos, the handicapping being by sealed points) was well received. It was unanimously decided to recommend tho general committee to favourably consider the proposal. Mr T. Warren kindly offered the prize won by him in last year’s draughts tournament for competition in this year’s contest. An interesting sketch of the draughts championship meeting, recently held in Auckland, was given by the club’s representative, Mr C. Erickson. He mentioned that the play ■was very strenuous and full of incident, also that the competitors wore most hospitably treated, one and all enjoying the good times provided by tho Auckland management committee. Votes of thanks to last year s officebearers, and to Mr Milesi for presiding, closed the meeting. CANTERBURY C.C. v. WELLINGTON C.C. This 10-aside telegraphic match commences next Saturday, at 7 p.m., and is to be continued on the following Saturday. The Canterbury Club is being represented by Messrs Severne, Nightingale, J. Kennedy, H. Kennedy, Cumberworth, Woodford, Hawkins, Lovell-Smith, Joyce, and Brown, and the Wellington Club by Messrs W. E. Mason, Barnes, Still, W. Mackay, Kelling, Fouhy, Barraud, Fell, S. Gyles, and Hill. Emergencies: Carman, Tanner and Mackenzie. The game at board 1, which is being played “over the board,” stands adjourned at a most interesting stage, as mentioned in our last week’s notes. Canterbury/ having won the toss, will have first move at the odd-numbered hoards. The time-limit is 18 moves per hour. This contest is being looked forward to with much interest. WELLINGTON SOUTH CHESS CLUB. .

Three of this club’s ladder matches were advanced a further stage last Friday evening. The second game for the championship of the club was adjourned at 11 p- ni., Mr Purchas (challenger) being a Knight to the good. Mr B. B. Allen (defender) is trying hard to make good the lost ground and to bring about one of those “end-gam© recoveries,” with ■which he has often nulled a seemingly lost game out of the fire. In the contest for rung 8, Mr H. J. Thompson (challenger) won the first game from Mr Perrott. The latter failed to provide sufficient retreat for a major piece, which consequently fell to a pawn attack. Rung 15 is retained by F. Laughton, who won two games out of three from H. Douglas (challenger).

The club has accepted a challenge from the Ngaio Chess Club, and members are looking forward with much pleasure to the match, which is to be played early in June —probably on the second Wednesday of the month. The contest will, it is expected, be one of 14 or 15 players on each side.

KGAIO CHESS AND DRAUGHTS CLUB. Mr B. J. Barnes visited the above club’s rooms on Wednesday evening, and gave an exhibition of simultaneous p ay. In less than 3 hours he won all the ten games. At the supper adjournment ho was accorded a hearty veto of thanks on the motion of the president (Mr A. B. Topp). In acknowledging the tribute, the veteran urged the local players to make a more general study of the opening moves.

The change in designation from “Ngaio Circle” to ‘‘Ngaio Chess and Draughts Club” was made at the recent annual meeting, in consequence of a marked increase'in the membership. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, A. B. Topp; vice-president, E. Hicks, senr.; hon. secretary, W. J. Hicks (care of Henry Kember and Son): hon. treasurer, P. Banks; handicappers, Messrs H. V. Croxton and P. Banks. The club’s handicap tournament, which has attracted 13 entries, will be commenced this week.
