WHITE AUSTRALIA OBSERVATIONS BY LORD DENMAN. By Telegraph— Press Association— Copyrtch* MELBOURNE, May 15. Lord and Lady Denman have departed for England.
Speaking at a farewell Parliamentary luncheon Mr Cook (Federal Prime Minister) and Mr Fisher (leader of tho Opposition) eulogised Lord Denman’s administration as Governor-General.
Lord Denman, replying, said he had been hero long enough to understand the underlying feelings of Australians with regard to a White Australia, and ho recognised that the Australian would never be content to, rely on a treaty with any foreign power, however friendly that power was, for the defence of the Pacific. ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE. NEW ZEALAND MINISTERS’ iSPEECHES. MR CHURCHILL ANSWERS A • QUESTION. LONDON, May 15. In the House of Commons, Mr Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, in replying to Mr F. Hall (Unionist member for Dulwich), said ho had seen press reports of New Zealand Ministers’ speeches on the Anglo-,1 apnneso Alliance. If- the Now Zealand Government desired to make further proposals before the Conference was he Id the Admiralty would give them attention. STATEMENT BY MR MASSEY. Press Association. • GISBORNE, May 15. Mr Winston Churchill’s statement regarding New Zealand Ministers and the Anglo-Japanese agreement was referred to the Premier by a reporter this' evening. ■ Mr Massey stated that the proposals of the New Zealand Government, were already in .the hands of the Admiralty. A, great number of cablegrams had passed between the Government and Mr Churchill on the subject, and nothing further could now be done until the conference met, which he hoped would he early next year. Mr Massey stated that he was looking forward with a great deal of interest to meeting the representatives from other parts of the Empire to go fully into this important question.
