WATERSIDE WORKERS
AN AUCKLAND QUARREL. Press Association, AUCKLAND, March 16. Quarrels between arbitrationiste arid foderationists are of almost daily occurrence in the city, And men are constantly appearing in the court charged with breaches of the peace, assault, etc. Two cases were ventilated in the Police Court to-day. In one case, Thomas Bates, an cx-striker, was charged with assault. It appeared that he met a man named Hargreaves, an arbitrationist. and allowed Hargreaves to see a photograph of the strike committee in which he. Bates, figured. Hargreaves remarked disparagingly that it was a wonder the cam era didn’t break. ■ Bates was so angry that he struck Hargreaves* and the latter promptly, retaliated and blacked Bates’s cyei He knocked him down and sat on him until the constable came and took Mm to the lockup. Bates complained that the witness who supported Hargreaves’S statement was biassed against the old waterside workers, who were victimised men, and were- nOt allowed to live.The Magistrate sentenced Bates to seven days’ imprisonment..." ■ - r In the other case an ex-waterside worker, found guilty of 'using obscene language, was fined £2.
