They 'go on to Puugarehu by the New Plymouth express to-day to attend the big native gathering there to-morrow. Their Excellencies will return to Wellington on Thursday evening, leaving by the Maori for Lyttelton the same night. Both His Excellency and the Countess are to he present at the Orakau jubilee in the Waikato ou Apri 1 Ist. Mr G. H. Father Macarthy, S.M., at' present engaged with other Marist Fathers in conducting a mission at St." Mary of the Angel’s, Boulcott street, was at one time a member of the Faculi' ty of St. Patrick’s College. The i*ev. gentleman, who was well known locally in athletic circles, has for the past four years been engaged in conducting similar missions in various parts of New Zealand and Australia. The Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F. Massey) was at Nelson yesterday. Ho goes on to the coast to-day,-and will be at Reeftou to-morrow. The Hon. W. 11. Kerries left for 'Nett' Plymouth yesterday morning. Ho -is to sjjend some days in the Taranaki district, .and will be at Opunake today. He returns to Wellington on Thursday or Friday. The Hon. Allen returns from Dunedin tomorrow morning. The Hon. R. H, Rhodes will he in Christchurch until later in the week. The Hon. A. L. Herdman and the lion. H. D. A cablegram lias been received byMr A. T. Bate from Bournemouth England, to the effect that Mr Edwir Charles Batkin, formerly a- residcntT'd;' Wellington, and a native of Auckland.' died at that seaside resort. The deceased was sixty years of age, and wai a son of the late Mr C. T. Batkin', whe; for many years was Secretary to the Treasury and Assistant ControllerGeneral. Mr E. C. Batkin will be well remembered by yachting and rowing enthusiasts of the old school, as he took a great interest in. both sports, and was secretary of the Star Boating Club for several years. At one tune • be was in the employ of the ■ late Messrs Brandon and Quick, barristers and solicitors of this city, and subse quently entered the Crown Law Office, where he remained until he tookl a tobacconist’s business on Lambton quay, which is now carried on by Mr R. W. Armit. Only a few years ago he returned to Wellington from Queens■land with his wife and two children, 'but- left shortly afterwards for Bournemouth, where he resided up till the l time of his death.
