CASES YESTERDAY, Yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was presided over by Air E. AV. Burton, S.AI. ‘ _ ' For drunkenness two first-offenders were convicted ■ and discharged while another, who failed to appear, had the amount of his bail estreated, default being fixed at twenty-four, hours, Janies Pettit, with two previous convictions against his name, was fined Jus, or three days’ imprisonment. George Hume, who appeared on remand on a charge of being found helplessly drunk in Alanners street, was convicted and ordered to pay Us 6d expenses, and a prohibition order was issued against him. Defendant was given to tho end of tlie week in which to find the money. Thomas Elliott, on _ old man with fourteen previous convictions, appeared to answer a charge of stealing two portmanteaux and on© pair of gum hoots, to tho total value of £4 ss, the property of Jano Hayvice. The defendant pleaded guilty. Inspector Hendrey explained that on Wednesday tho accused entered a secondhand dealer s shop, picked up the goods, and walked away. He was observed by the ten-year-old daughter of Airs Hayvice. Tho girl called her brother, a lad of about her own age, who followed tho man till a constable-was met with, when he was taken in charge. Tho magistrate .sentenced the man to one month s imprisonment, and ordered the goods to be restored to tli© owner. CIVIL CASES BY DEFAULT.
